Netnography with Surgical & Economic Healthcare Stakeholders
Client: UK-based MR Agency
Fieldwork Period: June 2024
Target Audience: Economic Healthcare Stakeholders & Surgeons (Colorectal, Thoracic, Bariatric, Directors of Surgery/Robotics)
Geography: USA, UK, Germany, France and Spain
The Challenge
The client wanted to understand how surgical and economic decision-makers discuss clinical technologies, operational challenges, and purchasing considerations in real-world professional conversations.
Traditional interviews risked influencing responses, while the audience — senior surgeons and hospital decision-makers — often share more candid perspectives within peer communities rather than formal research settings.
Key challenges included:
Accessing natural, unbiased opinions
Identifying verified professionals in online environments
Interpreting technical clinical discussions accurately
Distinguishing economic vs clinical decision drivers
Ensuring ethical and compliant observation
Our Approach
PSP conducted a structured netnography study focused on observing authentic professional discussions within verified medical environments.
1. Community Identification
We mapped relevant professional forums, specialist groups, and restricted-access healthcare communities where verified surgeons actively engage.
2. Participant Validation
Profiles were assessed using role indicators, discussion history, and credential references to confirm professional authenticity.
3. Structured Observation Framework
We tracked recurring themes including:
Technology adoption reasoning
Cost and reimbursement considerations
Workflow integration challenges
Peer influence in decision making
4. Analytical Interpretation
Clinical terminology and context were interpreted by experienced healthcare researchers to ensure accurate insight extraction.
The Outcome
PSP delivered structured qualitative insights derived from real-world professional discussions without influencing participant behavior.
Delivered:
Verified surgeon and stakeholder conversations
Thematic analysis of clinical and economic viewpoints
Clear differentiation of decision drivers
Actionable observational insights
Impact for the Client
The study helped the client to:
Understand authentic attitudes toward surgical technologies
Identify economic considerations influencing adoption
Recognize peer influence patterns
Support strategic positioning and messaging
Why This Matters
Certain audiences speak most openly among peers.
Netnography allows access to unbiased professional perspectives, and this project demonstrated PSP’s ability to ethically capture and interpret those conversations for meaningful healthcare insights.
